On October 30, 2005, Six Flags Astroworld in Houston, Texas closed their gates for the last time as the amusement park shut down. Rapper and Houston native Travis Scott, frequently makes reference to this theme park in his music and even named his reoccurring, annual music festival the same same — ASTROWORLD.
Nearly 15 years later, tragedy has struck as a crowd surge during Travis Scott’s headlining performance on November 5, 2021 has caused the death of now 10 people (including a nine year old festival goer).
Travis Scott is a pioneer of the “rage” culture within hip hop. He encourages moshing, crowd surfing, incites violence and general chaos. The irony in this is that the Astroworld Fest’s FAQs and safety instructions state that there is no moshing allowed and that any disruptive actions would not be tolerated. The scene of the concert however is a prime example of all these things, yet the show continued on.
Since the incident, there has been over $750 million dollars in lawsuits and Nike has postponed a Travis Scott sneaker collaboration release.
All in all, I don’t think we’ll be experiencing Astroworld again in Texas anytime soon.
